{"id":484,"date":"2018-06-18T18:34:09","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T18:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.medbenanalytics.com\/?p=484"},"modified":"2018-07-17T18:37:26","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T18:37:26","slug":"bpci-vs-cjr-participation-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.medbenanalytics.com\/?p=484","title":{"rendered":"BPCI vs. CJR: Participation and Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Using Medicare and American Hospital Association data, <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=0012zjbx2a2xYSnUewf-4e-P6_emyxp0s5qkVkRISyyFEQeJ151lh47jl_JTDnV4FdIwD00_pGl33z2PtlsZ-CAZfdDDQTDyOl2g4Sm7U5X2CEbrI5_IhOTWQC3sNZovt7-oa6WUrsRUDCmSEsm0Mtz9m1QPDGNo0MQttriVtY_eMw7riaB8sPM4vlOVfxLlC0jgqoAVHHC76FAX_xf_P3WmQqqcwYElv86eq_npX0WIdA=&amp;c=iHVBawF4dmBSs1XUVYScx7ZJqaIsWtXTQ5O83uMDcK-v1giMZ6HQaw==&amp;ch=cxYBAVHJHDk_OZlaRaERmijKM4Q8a9r_E3_MH8rcxY4w03qFiW7dQg==\">Health Affairs<\/a> recently compared characteristics and baseline performance among hospitals in Medicare&#8217;s voluntary (Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative, or BPCI) and mandatory (Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model, or CJR) joint replacement bundled payment programs.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from their analysis include (per <a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=0012zjbx2a2xYSnUewf-4e-P6_emyxp0s5qkVkRISyyFEQeJ151lh47jl_JTDnV4FdIItTkjrrGKNYrhasGbrf6ZITLqQPkaVkhwL_3K_JXGkwD4IZ2enYZ1D1lD82r-A1Mp4e0JBGXxbhxB872baWo2A3TZ52kCqY3z_kDbjPtzbm-e1nELTuTi7KgTUA838P-GcvxYbhb-Z8opEMgaslkeoQF_vSkD2NG3sy47Md7AHQgrr-2MOZ3jojglZBHWPvMUPygg5WbiyFhmX8yYw9D4n7B185gX7LSul0x0lNsgNc=&amp;c=iHVBawF4dmBSs1XUVYScx7ZJqaIsWtXTQ5O83uMDcK-v1giMZ6HQaw==&amp;ch=cxYBAVHJHDk_OZlaRaERmijKM4Q8a9r_E3_MH8rcxY4w03qFiW7dQg==\">Becker&#8217;s Hospital Review<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BPCI hospitals generally were larger than CJR hospitals, and had higher average Medicare patient volume (nearly 7,200 compared to about 5,300).<\/li>\n<li>BPCI hospitals were more likely to be nonprofit, teaching hospitals and sole community providers compared to CJR hospitals.<\/li>\n<li>Both BPCI and CJR hospitals were similar as far as baseline readmission rates and mortality rates.<\/li>\n<li>BPCI hospitals had greater cost from institutional post-acute care, primarily due to inpatient rehabilitation facility cost, but researchers note the differences are not large.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study&#8217;s authors concluded: &#8220;These findings suggest that while both voluntary and mandatory approaches can play a role in engaging hospitals in bundled payment, mandatory programs can produce more robust, generalizable evidence.
